"I Can Remember When"

"I Can Remember When" illustrates a man dealing with destructive relationships and thoughts of being told to “suck it up and be a man.” Remembering relationships that had harmful meanings play into his destructive thoughts. As the work goes on, he learns how to leave these behind and progress into a more self-loving being. The piece begins somber and uncertain and ends with a hopeful and lighter tone to not only show progress in feelings, but also progress as a person. This work shares the demoralizing effects that toxic ideas and people can have on a person; as well as the difficulties that men face in contemporary society and an understanding of interpersonal relationships. This dance investigates the viewpoint of this man on three various emotions and connections. These three emotions/connections are interpreted by the audience in what they think they mean. The inspiration for this piece was from my own personal experiences growing up and how my cast clarified the meaning of the dance. Even though the dance focuses on feelings and people, it also asks the question of what does it mean to be a man?
